Doris Day Hollywood actress and singer died at age 97 legendary actress

The Doris Day Animal Foundation has confirmed the news Monday morning in a press release. The foundation wrote that day "had been in excellent physical health for his age, until recently contracting a severe case of pneumonia, resulting in his death."

The singer-actress died at her home in Carmel Valley, California, and was " surrounded by close friends as she passed by.Doris Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff was born in April 1922.

She began her singing career at the age of 15. His first hit, "Sentimental Journey", was to become an iconic tune.

His films, including Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much and That Touch of Mink, have made him known around the world.

But she never won an Oscar and was nominated only once, in 1960, for Pillow Talk, the first of her three romantic comedies with Hudson.

She received the Presidential Medal of freedom in 2004 and a lifetime Grammy in 2008.

His latest release, the compilation my Heart, was number one in the UK in 2011.                                                                                                           

Day was married four times in her life, the last time with Barry Comden, whom she left in 1982 after more than five years of marriage. She has a son, Terry Melcher, whom she shares with her first husband, Al Jorden. Melcher, a musician, died in 2004 at the age of 62 after a battle against melanoma.
